Director at Larnach Castle

If I could only visit one city in New Zealand it would be…
Dunedin aside, I love Nelson. Wonderful memories of spending my youth at beaches there.

Three things I love about the North Island are…
The vineyards in Hawkes Bay, swimming in Waiheke and having brunch in Greytown.

Describe the typical New Zealander in three words…
Warm, friendly and genuine.

My favorite spot to relax is…
Landscaping at my property on the Otago peninsula, call it active therapy. For a visitor, the peninsula is a diverse place to quietly explore at your leisure.

NZ’s yummiest icecream can be found at…
Anywhere that sells Kapiti icecream. Delicious! Best place in Dunedin is the Rob Roy dairy near the university.

Essential Kiwi lingo to learn…
Yea nah. Visitors must wonder if that actually means yes or no.

The best summer picnic spot is…
Central Otago in summer just can’t be beaten. Anywhere that looks like it is out of a Grahame Sydney painting will do, just wonderful landscapes.

My ultimate ‘family day out’ would be…
Our family crib (New Zealand term for holiday home) at Shag Point, just north of Dunedin, wandering the beaches with the kids.

If you love nature you should check out…
Definitely the New Zealand Festival of Nature, in Dunedin from the 22 -28 April 2019. Fantastic chance to get out in any of the 80 odd events to embrace and learn about nature.

When I need a caffeine fix I go to…
I have to admit I go to our café here at the castle every morning to get my cappuccino.

For a good view, visit…
I have to show my bias here again, but the view from the castle tower over the Otago Peninsula and Dunedin is just incredible. Larnach certainly did pick his spot well.

My hometown’s best-kept secret is…
The heritage is well known, but the amount of wildlife so close to the city still amazes people. But there is a balance here of showing it off and enhancing it.

I love New Zealand because…
We are a young country by world standards, but we love what we are and stand up for what we believe in.
