Do
- Take a tiki tour (the long, sometimes unplanned route)
- Visit the out-of-the-way places you can't get to by public transport
- Take your time
- Take some maps - Internet based GPS isn’t available in remote locations
- Use the many affordable camping grounds around New Zealand - book ahead for summer
- Be prepared for all types of weather with "four seasons in one day"
- Travel in the shoulder (Mar-May & Sep-Nov) or off-season (Jun-Aug) to save $$

- Look out for signs telling you what is and isn’t allowed
- Freedom camp only where it is legal
- Use public toilets if you don’t have a self-contained vehicle
Don't
- Light fires
- Freedom camp on private land
- Leave behind rubbish or other waste
- Drive faster than the speed limit
