Editor - Patrick Smith: - back to top Patrick Smith brings to his role as editor of arrival a background in journalism that began in England on the staff of a national magazine group. Before setting off to travel overseas (a passion that continues to this day), he had become editor of the group’s glossy monthly Nottingham Observer and was writing for other magazines in the stable. His travels led him to Thailand, were he worked for the Bangkok World newspaper as a writer and assistant editor of its weekend magazine for a year before returning to the UK via India, Afghanistan and Russia. Back in London he worked briefly in PR, then joined the clothing industry weekly magazine Menswear as deputy chief reporter. A spell living and working on the Greek island of Corfu led to his seeking a kinder climate than London’s and he quit the UK for Australia, where he landed a job with AAP-Reuter in Sydney as duty news editor in its economic section. Family circumstances brought him to New Zealand a couple of years later and after a few months exploring the country from top to bottom he joined Radio New Zealand News in Auckland as a senior reporter, working on stories that ranged from local body politics to crime and general news. Towards the end of the 70s he ‘emigrated’ to Waiheke Island with his Hawke’s Bay-born wife Virginia, where he edited the local weekly newspaper, Gulf News and bought an interest in a bookshop. After a year travelling through the USA (where he studied physical theatre), the UK, Europe and North Africa, Patrick returned to Auckland and joined the Auckland Star as a subeditor, later moving to the features department as Arts Editor and finally Deputy Feature Editor, working on the Star and the Sunday Star-Times. In 1989, shortly before the demise of the Auckland Star, Patrick left to set up his own freelance editorial business, Context, which he has continued to run successfully since, writing on everything from the arts, theatre and film to sport, marketing and travel. He has edited a number of magazines, including NZ Pharmacy, Ansett’s Golden Wing, and Healthy Living. For several years he was a contract announcer for the Concert Programme, announcing live and recorded classical concerts from Auckland. For the past two years Patrick has been president of New Zealand Travel Communicators, an association of travel writers, photographers and other industry communicators which presents the annual Cathay Pacific Travel Media Awards. He lives in Mt Eden with Virginia and their two sons, Ben and Toby and enjoys golf, travel, walking, photography, music, film and books.
