Visitors to New Zealand often look at the size of the country and think they can see the best of both islands with a few days driving. But some of the most spectacular sights are inaccessible by road. A bounty of lakes, rivers, picturesque bays and fiords, snowy peaks, volcanoes, deserts and dense forests awaits anyone who's prepared to venture off the beaten track. Transport infrastructure is good and caters to the most offbeat diversion The speed limit on open roads and motorways is 100km per hour and 50km per hour in towns. Wearing seatbelts is compulsory in front and rear seats and young children must be strapped into a car restraint.
